McDowell County Public Library

Dear Readers,
We are excited to announce the re-launch of the “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” program! While this is not a new initiative for the library, we are refreshing it and bringing it back into the spotlight at both our Marion and Old Fort locations.

For those unfamiliar with the program, “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” encourages caregivers to read 1,000 books with their child from birth until they enter kindergarten. The goal is to foster a love of reading and build foundational literacy skills through consistent interactions with books.

Here’s a brief overview of how the program works:

Register – Families can sign up at either of our library locations or online, using this link.

  • Read – Families may begin reading any books to their child from birth until they start kindergarten. All books count, including those owned, borrowed from the library, and even repeated readings of the same book.
  • Track – Log the books read to monitor progress toward the 1,000 book goal.
  • Collect Prizes – We offer incentives and prizes for reaching milestones, such as every 100 books read.
  • Celebrate – Each year, we will celebrate children and their families who successfully complete the challenge with a special event.

Please note that reading logs for those hoping to complete the challenge for next year are due by July 30, 2026. The challenge is ongoing for participants who have not yet reached 1,000 books. Program reward prizes will be available and will be clearly labeled for each milestone.

Here is a link to a folder of information, in case you need to print out more.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for your help and support in making this program a great success!

Happy Reading!
