Teen Fall Programs

One Line Wall Art

Tuesday, October 9 , at the Marion Branch Library, 4:00 p.m

Thursday, October 11 at the Old Fort Branch Library, 4:00 p.m

Teens will use old books and magazines to create one of a kind word wall art.

 

Acrylic Painting on Canvas

Tuesday, October 16 at the Marion Branch Library,4:00 p.m.

Thursday, October 18 at the Old Fort Branch Library,4:00 p.m.

Teens will paint a very colorful ostrich on canvas using acrylic paints.

 

Pendulum Painting

Tuesday, October 23 at the Marion Branch Library,4:00 p.m.

Thursday, October 25 at the Old Fort Branch Library, 4:00 p.m.

Teens will learn how to create a pendulum which can be used to create a

unique painting.

 

Breakout Box

Tuesday, October 30 at the Marion Branch Library, 4:00 p.m.

Thursday, November 1 at the Old Fort Branch Library, 4:00 p.m.

Teens will have to follow clues, sidestep the red herrings, and work together

to beat the clock in order to get the box open in time to win a prize inside.

 

Mixed Media Lighthouses

Tuesday, November 6 at the Marion Branch Library, 4:00 p.m.

Thursday, November 8 at the Old Fort Branch Library, 4:00 p.m.

Teens will create a portrait of a lighthouse using several different materials.

 

Teen Time -Silhouette Painting

Tuesday, November 13 at the Marion Branch Library, 4:00 p.m.

Thursday, November 15 at the Old Fort Branch Library,4:00 p.m.

Teens will paint a striking silhouette on canvas.

 

Teen Time -Soap Making Class

Tuesday, November 27 at the Marion Branch Library, 4:00 p.m.

Thursday, November 29 at the Old Fort Branch Library, 4:00 p.m.

Teens will learn how to make soap.

Adult & Senior Programs

Adult Programming

October 10 – Resume Building Workshop 1:00 PM at the Marion Branch Library. Attendees will work with professionals to construct an effective resume and learn tips in conducting a memorable interview.

October 11 – Ghost Hunters Forum 5:30 PM at the Marion Branch Library. M&D Paranormal and Cryptid Research presents a forum to discuss paranormal activity in Western, North Carolina.

October 24 – Julia Nunnally Duncan, Local Author Book Signing 4:00 PM at the Marion Branch Library. Julia Nunnally Duncan, author of A Neighborhood Changes, will be presenting her works, reading excerpts, and signing copies.

October 25 – Character-Con/Trivia Night 5:30 PM at the Marion Branch Library. Dress up as your favorite book character and join us for a Trivia Night. Refreshments and fun will be provided!

November 5 – War Ink 4:00 PM at the Marion Branch Library. Storytelling – Veterans from Western, North Carolina describe, display and record their war memorial body art.

November 8 – Board Game Night 5:30 PM at the Marion Branch Library. Join us for a night of board games, fun, refreshments, and prizes. Games will be provided.

November 15 – Idol Talk, Local Author and Editor Signing and Presentation 5:30 PM at the Marion Branch Library. Susan Woodring, contributor to Idol Talk and Tamra Wilson, editor of Idol Talk, will be presenting their work, reading excerpts, and signing copies. We will be raffling off one, signed copy of their book. Attendance is required to enter.

November 19 – Recipe Swap 4:00 PM at the Marion Branch Library. Bring a copy of your favorite family recipe and exchange with others. Recipe cards will be provided. We will be raffling off a cookbook. Attendance is required to enter.

December 6 – Gingerbread House Decorating Party 5:30 PM at the Marion Branch Library. Create your own Gingerbread House and enter in a chance to win a door prize. Attendance is required to enter. Refreshments will be served.

December 7 – Gingerbread House Decorating Party 4:00 PM at the Old Fort Branch Library. Create your own Gingerbread House and enter in a chance to win a door prize. Attendance is required to enter. Refreshments will be served.

December 13 – Ugly Christmas Sweater Decorating Party 5:30 PM at the Marion Branch Library. Join us for a night of decorating. You provide the sweater and we’ll provide the ugly! The ugliest sweater will win a prize!

December 17 – Bingo Night 4:00 PM at the Marion Branch Library. Refreshments will be served and prizes will be given!

December 1-18 – Toy Drive. Sponsored by McDowell Public Library, Sunkissed Tanning, and McDowell County Head Start. Donation boxes will be placed at the Marion and Old Fort Library Branches, as well as Sunkissed Tanning Salon on Main Street. Toys will be donated to children in McDowell County.

Preschool Story Time

Tuesdays at 10:30am – Old Fort Branch Library
Books, songs, felt board stories, action rhymes and fun for pre-school aged children.

Crafts for Little Hands
Ages Birth-5
Second Monday at 11:00am – Marion Branch Library
Second Tuesday at 11:00am – Old Fort Branch Library
Once a month after Story Time, preschool-aged children are invited to craft at the library. Dress for a mess because we will be using glue, scissors, paints, paper, markers, crayons and much more! Targeted age group 3- to 5-year olds, but all are welcome.

Afterschool Adventures 
School Age
Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. – Old Fort Branch Library (BEGINS SEPTEMBER 18th)
Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. – Marion Branch Library (BEGINS SEPTEMBER 6th)
This is an activity for children ages 5 and up. LEGO Challenges, board games, crafts, and outdoor fun!

PAWS for Reading 
School Age – Registration Required
Every Thursday at 4:30pm – Marion Branch Library
Kids ages 5-10 are invited to sign up for a 15-minute reading session with one of our therapy dogs. A fun way to build literacy skills and confidence! Free and open to the public. Registration required. Spaces are limited.

Sensory Story Time
All Ages – Registration Required
First Saturday at 12:00 – Marion Branch Library
Sensory Story Time is an all-ages program created for the families of children with special needs. Our goal each story time is to engage the senses through interactive books, songs encouraging movement, and other exciting sensory activities. Registration required.

The Lab: Apple Science

Wednesday, September 12 at 3:30 – Old Fort Branch Library
Join us in The Lab as we build and conduct interesting experiments. This month: Join us as we learn all about the science of apples! For school-age children, ages 5+.

Salt Crystal Leaves
All Ages
Saturday, September 22 from 12:00-2:00 – Marion Branch Library,
Come make beautiful crystallized leaves using pipe cleaners and salt!

The Studio: Apple Stamping
School Age
Wednesday, September 19 at 4:00 – Marion Branch Library
Wednesday, September 26 at 3:30 – Old Fort Branch Library
Try your hand at different art techniques in The Studio.  This month: Create a basket of apples with stamping & weaving techniques! For school-age children, ages 5+.

NC Cardinal Updates!

Our catalog is getting an update starting February 19th.

Here are the services that will be affected and for how long:

 

February 19th- March 5th (2 weeks)

Requesting items from other library systems will be suspended.

In the meantime we’re happy to take your request!  On Monday, March 5th, we’ll submit all requests we’ve received.

 

February 26th- March 5th (1 week)
We will be unable to accept fines or check your account.

Not to worry- you can still check out items

and download books!
